PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Republican congressional candidate and former state police superintendent Brendan Doherty on Tuesday criticized U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline for accepting approximately $12,000 in campaign contributions over the years from Rhode Island strip club and massage parlor owners.
“Accepting campaign contributions from strip clubs, topless bars and houses of prostitution that exploit women for profit clashes with Cicilline’s claims of advocating for women,” said Ian Prior, Doherty’s campaign manager.
“While Doherty fought to outlaw underage girls from being hired as strippers, to enact a tough anti-human trafficking law and to close the loophole in Rhode Island law that prevented law enforcement from prosecuting indoor prostitution, Cicilline was fueling his political campaigns with the profits of the sex industry for his own political benefit,” said Prior.

The Doherty for Congress campaign is taking Congressman David Cicilline to task for “accepting approximately $12,000 in campaign contributions from individuals engaged in Rhode Island’s sex industry in recent years.”
The Doherty campaign said that by accepting money from individuals who own strip clubs or houses orprostitution and are “celebrated in the Rhode Island sex industry,” Cicilline is being a “political opportunist” and is not standing up for the rights of women.
